Studied conducting at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague (The Netherlands) with Jan Boogaarts, Ed Spanjaard, Jos van Veldhoven, Jos Vermunt, Jan Eelkema, and others (such as Lucas Vis). Masterclasses by William Christie (old music), Daan Manneke (modern music), a.o.
Nice fact: In the first year, the conductors teachers said that she would be allowed to do the exam for 'Performing Musician' (Master degree, for working with professionals), which is the highest conductor degree. If at all a student will be allowed to do a Master degree, usually gets decided before the fourth year or even as a supplement after graduation for the 'Practice Diploma' (the usual level, Bachelor, for working with amateurs).

Over 5 jaar geef ik alweer 50 jaar concerten (en organiseer ze ook). Begon heel erg jong, zoals je begrijpt!!! Koos leuke liedjes, verzon 2e, 3e & 4e stemmen, verzamelde vriendinnetjes - net zo jong als ik, leerde hen de stempartijen, vroeg bejaardenhuizen (kunnen we jullie blij maken met een concert van ons?), maakte programmaboekjes (tekende plaatjes erin, en helemaal met de hand geschreven natuurlijk) en liet die stencilen. Het is nog altijd ZALIG om te mogen en kunnen doen: een cadeau mogen geven én tegelijk een cadeau mogen ontvangen (kip-of-ei principe).
MUZIEK houdt mijn lichaam jong, mijn hart warm en mijn ziel sterk.
In het begin met Nanneke, Patricia, Marjon, sjonge, lang geleden allemaal!
En veel later: Maja Roodveldt, Ruud Fiselier, Ronald Aijtink, Richard Prada, Caroline Stam, Serena Jansen, Rob Borst (†), en vele anderen... wat hadden we een lol met zijn allen!)

In 5 years I have been giving concerts for 50 years (organising them too). Started really young, as you can imagine!!! Chose nice songs, improvised 2nd, 3rd & 4th vocal parts, gathered some girlfriends - equally young as I, taught them vocal parts, asked retirement homes (could we make you happy by giving a concert?), made program booklets (drew pictures in it, and all written by hand of course), and had them stenciled. It still is WONDERFUL to be able and allowed to do so: being able to give a present and receiving a present at the same time (chicken-or-egg principle).
MUSIC keeps my body young, my heart warm, and my soul strong.

Еще 5 лет, а потом я даю концерты в течение 50 лет (тоже организовываю их). Я начал очень молодым, как вы можете себе представить !!! Я выбрал красивые песни, импровизировал 2-й, 3-й и 4-й голоса, собрал несколько подружек - очень молодой как и я, научил их разным голосам, тогда я спросил, хотят ли они нашего концерта в домах для пожилых людей, Я делал буклеты из нашей концертной программы (я рисовал в ней картинки и, конечно же, все писал вручную), и они были напечатаны с помощью трафаретустройства. Это все еще КРАСИВО, чтобы сделать это: быть в состоянии сделать подарок и получить подарок одновременно (принцип курицы или яйца).
МУЗЫКА сохраняет мое тело молодым, мое сердце теплым и мою душу сильной.

The film ‘THE CONDUCTOR’ is based on the true story of the Dutch born Antonia Brico. In the late 1920’s she was the world’s first woman who successfully conducted a large symphony orchestra. Until recent, women barely succeeded to reach the world’s top ranking conductors. This year, for the first time in Dutch history, the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra appointed a woman as its Chief Conductor: Karina Canellakis.
