Volgens de Soefi-leer is muziek eigenlijk een minuscule uitdrukking van de overweldigende en volmaakte harmonie van het hele universum - en dat is het geheim van zijn verbazingwekkende kracht om ons te ontroeren.
De Indiase Soefi-meester Hazrat Inayat Khan (Baroda 5 juli 1882 - New Delhi 5 februari 1927), zelf een hoogstaand musicus, heeft het Universeel Soefisme naar het Westen bracht. Zijn heldere uiteenzetting van de goddelijke aard van muziek is een moderne klassieker geworden, geliefd bij Soefi-leerlingen en allerlei soorten musici.
Vooral zijn visie op de helende eigenschappen van muziek is zeer actueel en geeft stof tot nadenken.
Mirabai
Arnhems musicus (zangeres, componist, dirigent, multi-instrimentalist), sacred dance docent en health-helper.
Zij zingt over Licht, Liefde, Leven, muziek en de natuur. Van nature een mystica met universele inzichten, was ze blij om in 1990 het Universeel Soefisme te vinden. De gedachte hierachter komt dicht bij hoe ze het zelf altijd heeft gevoeld.
Mirabai ziet 'Universeel' als het ware als De Ziel van Alle Leven. Wit licht bestaat uit alle kleuren licht, en je zou de diverse religies als afsplitsingen daarvan kunnen zien, elk met een eigen kleur. Voor Mirabai gaat het om het Licht, niet om de kleur. Als je alle kleuren verf mengt, krijg je bruin. Wit straalt alles terug. Zwart neemt alles op. Daartussen dus een hele regenboog aan kleuren.
Als iedereen trouw is aan zijn eigen kleur, valt alles op zijn plek en vormen we samen Wit Licht, het Paradijs op aarde, zijn we - wat Mirabai 'HEEL+AL-EEN' noemt, als een Universal Kinship.
Leerlingen van het Universeel Soefisme zoeken naar de verbinding via afstemming op De Ene. Je kunt dit doen terwijl je trouw blijft aan jouw religieuze traditie.

P.o.M. Hidayat Inayat Khan gaf Mirabai haar Soefinaam in 1993 op het heilige terrein van de Soefitempel Universel Murad Hassil te Katwijk. P.o.M. Hidayat verzocht haar zijn composities te zingen, waarvan ook CD-opnames zijn gemaakt.
Ter gelegenheid van zijn 76e verjaardag op 6 augustus 1993 componeerde ze voor hem de 'Invocation, Toward the One' *) in Oriëntaalse stijl met de kracht van eenvoud, op tekst van zijn vader Hazrat Inayat Khan.
Gedurende vele lezingen van Mda. Ratan Witteveen in Nederland en België, maar bijvoorbeeld ook tijdens de International Summerschools te Katwijk, voor een aantal CD-opnames en zo'n 100 concerten -- nog los van de muzikale bijdragen in diensten etc., ook in Engeland en Israël -- heeft Mirabai legio liederen gezongen met 'De Boodschap van het Hart'. Daarbij begeleidde ze zichzelf op piano, tanpura, klavecimbel, Indiaas harmonium, fluit of harp.
Velen accompagneerden Mirabai's zang met 'De Boodschap van het Hart': Mda. Ratan Witteveen op piano/ tanpura, Sh. Hakiem van Lohuizen (w.o. liederen van P.o.M. Musharaff Moulamia Khan), Alla Libo en Amrita Zweers op piano; Sikander van der Vliet op trompet, Md. Wali van Lohuizen op Indiaas harmonium, e.a.
Mda. Ratan, Nadjma van Goens Youskine en Amrita Zweers zongen ook wel Soefi duetten met Mirabai.
Al snel vroeg Mda. Ratan Mirabai het Universele Soefikoor te dirigeren en nam ze zelf zangles bij haar.
I.o.m. Md. Karimbakhsh Witteveen, die na Sh. Hakiem van Lohuizen haar Soefileraar werd, maakte Mirabai in 2018 een CD met liederen van Mda. Ratan Witteveen. Deze CD 'Feeling Thine Arms Around Me, Ode to Murshida Ratan' *) werd gepresenteerd op Paaszondag 1 april in de Anna Paulowna straat te Den Haag aansluitend aan de Universele Eredienst *). Ratan zou die dag namelijk haar 99e levensjaar begonnen zijn.

Bij verschillende (Soefi-) gelegenheden heeft Mirabai op verzoek Dances of Universal Peace *) geleid, o.m. in de Soefitempel Universel.
In de Grote Kerk te Den Haag, tijdens de interreligieuze viering op Prinsjesdag 2018 *), vertegenwoordigde Mirabai het Universeel Soefisme. Ze diende een lied te componeren dat symbolisch het thema 'Één mensenfamilie' verklankt. Daarvoor koos ze de hoofd mantra's uit vier religieuze tradities die met verschillende woorden hetzelfde betekenen. Haar lied 'AMEN !' *) opent met een Christelijke mantra. Daarna klinkt het harmonisch fundament, waarvoor ze traditionele Hindu, Joodse en Soefi mantra's als drie nadi's dooreenvlocht. Dat geheel draagt haar Nederlandse lyrics naar de slotzin: "Onze harten zingen dankbaar: AMEN !". Het laatste AMEN werd natuurlijk meegezongen door de 1000 aanwezige ministers en bezoekers, om het gevoel van 'Één mensenfamilie' nog eens extra te bekrachtigen.

Md. Karimbakhsh Witteveen vroeg Mirabai liederen van Mda. Ratan met harp te zingen op 12 juni 2018 in Wassenaar, t.g.v. zijn laatste verjaardag (bleek later), naast de vleugel waarop zijn dierbare echtgenote zo vaak devote muziek tot klinken had gebracht.

Daarop stelde Sh.u.M. Mahmood khan Youskine nog tijdens Karimbakhsh's feest voor dat Mirabai een solo concert zou zingen met haar harp rondom de liederen van zijn vader Mir Pyarumiyan Maheboob khan, broer van Hazrat Inayat Khan.
Dit resulteerde in een nieuwe Universele Soefi CD en tournee van maarliefst 10 concerten 'Magic of Music' *) door heel Nederland met muziek van Hazrat Inayat Khan, Mir Pyarumiyan Maheboob khan, P.o.M. Hidayat Inayat Khan, Mda. Ratan Witteveen en Mirabai.
De CD 'Magic of Music' *) was voor het eerst beschikbaar bij de start van de concertreeks in de Soefitempel te Katwijk op 1-9-2019.
Tijdens de Memorial Service van Md. Karimbakhsh Witteveen op 30 april 2019 zong Mirabai met haar harp in de overvolle Soefitempel Universel te Katwijk een gebed op de tekst van Hazrat Inayat Khan's 'Prayer for the Dead' *).
Speciaal voor het afscheid van haar zo inspirerende leraar, bij wie zij lang geleden al kind aan huis was, had Mirabai dit lied gecomponeerd. Ze schreef het in een Oriëntaalse, pure stijl, met de kracht van eenvoud, zoals Mda. Ratan het geschreven zou kunnen hebben en waar Mirabai zelf ook zo van houdt.

Music, according to Sufi teaching, is really a small expression of the overwhelming and perfect harmony of the whole universe - and that is the secret of its amazing power to move us.
The Indian Sufi master Hazrat Inayat Khan (Baroda July 5, 1882 - New Delhi February 5, 1927), who brought Universal Sufism to the West, was a perfoming master musician himself. His lucid exposition of music's divine nature has become a modern classic, loved by Sufi pupils and musicians of all kinds.
Especially his vision on the healing of music is very topical and gives food for thought.
Mirabai
Arnhem musician (singer, composer, conductor, multi-intrumentalist), sacred dance teacher and health-helper. She sings about Light, Love, Life, music and nature. As a natural mystic with a universal insight, she was happy to find Universal Sufism in 1990. The thought behind comes close to how she had always felt it.
Mirabai sees 'Universal' like The Soul of All Life. White light consists of all colors of light, and you could see the various religions as offshoots thereof, each with its own colour. For Mirabai, it's about the Light, not the colour. If you would mix all the paint colors, you would get brown. White reflects all. Black absorbs all. A complete rainbow of colors in between.
When everyone would be true to their own color, everything would fall into place, and together we would form that White Light, Paradise on Earth, we are - what Mirabai calls - 'WHOLE+ALL-ONE', as a Universal Kinship.
Pupils of Universal Sufism look for the connection through attunement to The One. You can do this while staying true to your religious tradition.

P.o.M. Hidayat Inayat Khan gave Mirabai her Sufi name in 1993 on the sacred ground of the Sufi Temple Murad Hassil in Katwijk.
P.o.M. Hidayat requested her to sing his compositions, of which CD recordings have been made as well.
For his 76th birthday on August 6, 1993, she composed for him the 'Invocation, Toward the One' *) in Oriental style with the power of simplicity, to a text by his father Hazrat Inayat Khan.
During many lectures of Mda. Ratan Witteveen in the Netherlands and Belgium, but also for example during the International Summer Schools in Katwijk, for a number of CD recordings and about 100 concerts -- apart from the many musical contributions in services etc. also in England and Israel -- Mirabai has sung countless songs with The Message of the Heart. She accompanied herself on piano, tanpura, harpsichord, Indian harmonium, flute or harp.
Many accompanied Mirabai's Sufi singing: Mda. Ratan Witteveen on piano/tanpura, Sh. Hakiem van Lohuizen (including songs by P.o.M. Musharaff Moulamia Khan), Alla Libo and Amrita Zweers on piano; Sikander van der Vliet on trumpet, Md. Wali van Lohuizen on Indian harmonium, a.o.
Mda. Ratan Witteveen, Nadjma van Goens Youskine and Amrita Zweers sang some Sufi duets with Mirabai.
Early on Mda. Ratan invited Mirabai to conduct the Sufi choir and she took singing lessons from her as well.
In consultation with Md. Karimbakhsh Witteveen, who became her Sufi teacher after Sh. Hakiem van Lohuizen, Mirabai made a CD in 2018 with songs composed by Mda. Ratan Witteveen. This CD 'Feeling Thine Arms Around Me, Ode to Murshida Ratan' *) was presented on Easter Sunday April 1st. in the Anna Paulowna Street in The Hague, right after the Sufi service *). All in honour of Mda. Ratan, who would have started her 99th year of life that day.

On several (Sufi) occasions, Mirabai has conducted Dances of Universal Peace*) upon request, including in the Sufi Temple.
In the Grand Church in The Hague, during the interreligieus service on Budget Day 2018 *), Mirabai represented Universal Sufism. She needed to composer a song that symbolically expresses the theme 'One human family'. She chose the main mantra's of four religious traditions that use different words but mean the same. Her song 'AMEN !' *) opens with a Christian mantra. Then we hear the harmonic foundation of traditional Hindu, Jewish and Sufi mantrams that she intertwined like the three nadis. This as a whole carries her Dutch lyrics to the closing sentence: "Our hearts gratefully sing: AMEN !". For the last AMEN the 1000 present ministers and other visitors joined in, thus extra empowering the welcoming of 'one human family'.

Md. Karimbakhsh Witteveen asked Mirabai to sing songs from Mda. Ratan with harp on June 12, 2018 in Wassenaar, on the occasion of his last birthday (as we learnt later), next to the grand piano on which his dear life companion had played devoted music so often.

Then Sh.u.M. Mahmood khan Youskine during Md. Karimbakhsh's party suggested Mirabai to sing with her harp a solo concert around the songs of his father Mir Pyarumiyan Maheboob khan, brother of Hazrat Inayat Khan.
This resulted in a new CD and a tour of no less than 10 concerts 'Magic of Music' *) throughout the Netherlands with music by Hazrat Inayat Khan, Pyarumiyan Maheboob khan, P.o.M. Hidayat Inayat Khan, Mda. Ratan Witteveen and Mirabai.
The CD 'Magic of Music' *) was offered for the first time during the start of the concert tour in the Sufi Temple in Katwijk on 9/1/2019.
During the Memorial Service of Md. Karimbakhsh Witteveen in the crowded Sufi Temple in Katwijk on April 30, 2019, Mirabai sang with her harp a song to the text of Hazrat Inayat Khan's 'Prayer for the Dead' *).
Mirabai had composed this song especially for the farewell of her so very inspiring teacher, whom she visited regularly since long time ago. She wrote it in an Oriental, pure style, with the power of simplicity, like Mda. Ratan could have written it and which Mirabai too loves so much.
